The Fountain Head- Review
The movie is set in United States of American. The plot
revolves around the debate of whether blindly follow path which people have set
or keeping an individualistic approach towards it and create your own way and
set your own levels. Howard Roark, a young architect is one of kind of person
who refused to follows the convention building style and has his own
contrasting way of perceiving buildings. His works were appreciates though
criticized at different points of time. His journey as a new trendsetter of
modern architecture went through a lot of wax and wanes.
Roark believes that a building has integrity just as a man.
It must be true to its own idea, have its own form and serves its own function.
Well said a building must stands on its own and have a unique identity for the
purpose it has set for. He stood up against collectivism. He believed that man
came on earth unarmed and brain is his only weapon and mind is an attribute of
an individual there is no such things as collective brain, the man who thinks
must think and act on his own. The mind should not work under compulsion. It
cannot be subordinated to the needs, opinion, or wishes of others.
While delivering his statement in his defense he said that
every great creator stood up against the men of their time in order to bring
change which is necessary for keep going. Everything we have today has come
from the great work of some individual mind.
On a contrary it is being depicted that no creator was
prompted by the desire to please his brothers. His work was his only goal
whether they like it or not, they have to accept it in its way without any
opposition. The creator neither serves nor rule and only by living for himself
he can achieve the glory of mankind. He designed Cortlandt, made it possible
and then destroyed it because he agreed to design it at a cost that it should
be built as he wants it to be like but it was disfigured at whim of others.
He believed that before you can do things for people, you
must be the man who can get things done and to get things done you must love
what you are doing, not the people. His main motive was not to give people a
better living but his reward was his work itself done in his own way nothing
else matters to him.
He was so much abided by his laws that he even managed to
work in quarry but not surrender his design in front of anyone else. He doesn’t
build in order to have clients, but he has clients in order to build. In a way
or other he was imposing his design on them to accept it the way it is.
Summing up, integrity and individualism are an important
part but big changes can’t be bought without mass support. We all are social
creature and every individual thing depends on one another.
